The client’s request was that this console look like it had just rolled out of the Æolian-Skinner factory. Based on the pictures of the church furnishings I was shown, I suggested to Dick Houghten that quartered red oak might be the best overall choice, with walnut for the interior. We incorporated the usual features that we’ve come to expect when building shells in this style, plus several new details, such as the angled cut-ins for indicator lamps at the corners of the stopjamb returns. With the church being located in steamy Houston, the console also includes a pair of air conditioning vents in the jamb returns as well! The pedalboard and toestud bolsters were refurbished from the former console and finished to match the new work. A new adjustable bench in Æolian-Skinner style was also included as part of this work.
